Michael trained on clarinet with the National Children’s Wind Orchestra of Great Britain and graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2010. His passion for Jazz and Big Band developed during his time at the RWCMD when he performed the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto as part of his final year assessments. He first performed with the Milestone Big Band in the summer of 2011 and became Musical Director in September 2014.
As a busy freelance musician, Michael regularly performs on lead clarinet with his 7-piece Dixie Band The Riverboat Shuffle, and he is a founding member of The Surrey Saxophone Quartet in which he plays baritone saxophone (alongside Bob Bogucki, tenor sax). Michael has also worked with Sinfonia Cymru and the City of Cardiff Symphony Orchestra, and recently performed solo clarinet in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the Woking Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to a busy teaching schedule, Michael spends the majority of his time in the theatre pit and has an impressive list of show credits including Footloose, Little Shop of Horrors, West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, Grease, High Society, Cabaret, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Wizard of Oz, Kiss Me Kate, Oliver! and My Fair Lady.
Michael plays on a Yamaha YAS-62 Custom Alto sax with a Berg Larsen Grained Ebonite mouthpiece, and a Buffet R13 Bb Clarinet with a Vandoren 5RV Jazz mouthpiece.
